At Castle Hill Library we believe it is important to understand the use of social media by both our patrons using facilities and their family members.
In particular we would like to focus on informing parents as it is vital that parents understand the risks, needs and benefits of their child using social media. Below is an outline of the Library's action process in regards to social media.

Facebook
The library has chosen to use a Facebook page in conjunction with this blog as a way to communicate to its targeted audience of teenagers and young adults as '24% of teens go online "almost constantly" facilitated by the widespread availability of smartphones' (Lenhart 2015, para. 1).

Why use social media?
'The term "social media" refers to the wide range of Internet-based and mobile services that allow users to participate in online exchanges, contribute user-created content, or join online communities' (Library of Parliament 2012, p. 1)These platforms can take the form of:

- Social bookmarking
- Social networking sites - for example Facebook
- Status-update services - for example Twitter
- Virtual world content
- Media-sharing sites - for example YouTube'
The risks associated with social media for adolescents and young adults include
- 'peer-to-peer - for example cyber bullying
- in-appropriate content - for example sexting
- lack of understanding of online privacy issues
- outside influences of third-part advertising groups'
